Weybridge businesswomen take positives from recession

A pair of Weybridge businesswomen have used the recession to their advantage and started a company to help turn redundancy into a positive opportunity.

Anita Whiting and Jo Brandon started in the recruitment industry more than 20 years ago and, in response to the recession and changing economics, formed Career Confidence Consultancy.

The service offers those who have been made redundant the opportunity to get back into the job market as well as maximising the support companies can give when redundancy is the only option left.

Mrs Whiting said: “It’s about training people to believe it’s not a personal thing and picking them up off the floor. “The wheels of the industry are still turning and there are plenty of opportunities in the job market. “People who have been in their jobs for a while often need help in navigating their way around job sites and need to be taught how to sell themselves again. "That’s where we come in.”

Redundancy has become a growing concern to businesses and individuals, with unemployment figures in Elmbridge on the rise. The women are hopeful Career Confidence Consultancy will give people the techniques, presentation skills, interview skills and CVs to allow them to bounce straight back into business. RECRUITER MAGAZINE 11th May 09

Surrey-based rec-to-rec and training firm The Fresh Approach has launched Career Confidence, a new company aimed at helping recruiters deal with the effects of the recession.

“There’s been a huge increase in the volume of candidates. Agencies cannot cope with the volume of candidates at the same time as they are trying to develop new business,” says Anita Whiting, who has set up the company with fellow director Jo Brandon.

“The candidates are pretty much unskilled in looking for work in this market and agencies can’t give candidates the time they need.”

In response, Whiting is running as series of  jobshops for candidates, covering areas such as effective job hunting and proactive networking techniques.

Whiting says she hopes recruiters will send her their candidates who she hopes to return in better shape to compete in today’s tough jobs market.

The next jobshop is on 14 May and is free. After this candidates will pay £25 an hour for a two-hour session. The jobshops are aimed mainly at middle managers.

RECRUITMENT INTERNATIONAL MAY 09/July 09

A pair of Weybridge businesswomen have used the recession to their advantage and started a company to help turn redundancy into a positive opportunity which is benefiting the recruitment industry. Anita Whiting and Jo Brandon started in the recruitment industry more than 20 years ago and, in response to the recession and changing economics, formed Career Confidence.

The service offers those who have been made redundant the opportunity to get back into the job market as well as maximising the support companies can give when redundancy is the only option left. This has meant that where agencies felt as though they are inundated with too many candidates they can now turn to Career Confidence to help provide outplacement career advice and turn these people into potential fee placements once more. A further benefit to Recruitment Agencies is the company can help to alleviate pressure of door stopping when they refer candidates to us for training and we then send them back better prepared for the market?

Mrs Whiting said: “The wheels of the industry are still turning and there are plenty of opportunities in the job market. People who have been in their jobs for a while often need help in navigating their way around job sites and need to be taught how to sell themselves again. That’s where we come in and help everyone in the recruitment circle.”
